Benign Breast Conditions

Fibroadenoma

A fibroadenoma is a benign (non-cancerous) breast tumour. These will often present as palpable lesions typically identified in young women between the ages of 14 to 35years. They are solid lesions and usually easily identified on Breast Ultrasound scan. For definite diagnosis a core biopsy may be performed. If the tumour is symptomatic or increasing in size surgical excision may be recommended.

Nipple Discharge

Abnormal nipple discharge can be bloody or non-bloody (green, white, yellow). The most common cause of bloody nipple discharge is a benign intraduct papilloma. Occasionally bloody nipple discharge may be a sign of an underlying malignancy and therefore it should always be investigated.
